Hutchinson battles in vain with the bat as Halifax bow out

South Yorkshire avenged their defeat in the first round of last year’s competition when they beat the Halifax League by 60 runs on Sunday.

Halifax’s batting was found wanting at Kexborough CC after they were set a target of 191 to earn a place in the final of the West Yorkshire Area Council Knockout Cup.

Thornton’s Nikki Hutchinson came in at number four and made 49 not out but he ran out of partners with the total on 130, clubmate Ross Soames’s 17 being the next best score.

Earlier, Halifax had battled hard to get back in the game after a century opening stand by South Yorkshire.

Booth paceman Richard Laycock took three wickets and Bradshaw’s Chris Shannon two for four.

Three more South Yorkshire batsmen were run out - two to direct hits from Triangle’s Kurtis Whippey and Shannon and one following smart fielding from Hutchinson as the pair attempted to run two .

Team boss Wayne Cotton was pleased with the performances of Hutchinson, Shannon and another Thornton player, Ben Harris, who he said had bowled well into the wind with little luck.

He said South Yorkshire’s openers had batted well and enjoyed a little luck with one sharp chance going down at slip and the ball flying through the air close to gully on a couple of occasions.

However, they had laid solid foundations and a score of 190 was decent on a big ground.

Cotton was disappointed with a batting line-up shorn of ex-skipper Jamie Summerscales. He said: “They (South Yorkshire) had a couple of decent seamers and one spinner who was quite good but we should have done better.”
