Old Rishworthians coach Damian Ball got the response he wanted from his players last weekend, even if it didn’t lead to the result he had hoped for.
Last season’s Yorkshire Three champions had lost their opening two Yorkshire Two fixtures by heavy margins, prompting the former rugby league professional to challenge his players to ‘prove’ they were up to the task against West Park Leeds last weekend.
Rishies eventually slipped to a third consecutive defeat, but despite going down 23-18 Ball was in far more positive mood.
“We outscored them three tries to two and came away with the bonus point,” said Ball.
“I was generally very pleased with us; we showed signs that we are getting to grips with what it’s all about and hopefully that has given us something to build on.
“I always felt it was a mentality issue and it should have given us some belief; we had three or four chances to score more tries but couldn’t quite take them.”
Ball takes his side to Yarnbury tomorrow, with Elland rugby league centre Tom Hall - a BARLA junior international - poised for a start.
“He’s a sizeable player who is defensively very strong,” said Ball.
“We’ll try to get him into midfield where he can exert some influence on the game.
“But he’s just one player; it’s down to the group to try and improve together.”
Ryan Mudd and Nick Faulkner are also available again, while an unnamed Fijian centre, who has been playing amateur rugby league in the Rochdale area, could also figure.
