Crow Nest Park’s Jake Campbell will make his debut in the
Halifax-Huddersfield Union’s junior side against Sheffield at West End on Sunday.
Team boss Tommy Ward had hinted at the eight handicapper’s inclusion for the next Yorkshire Inter-District League match after the junior strokeplay championship at Willow Valley 19 days ago.
Campbell was unfazed by tough conditions and a testing course and Ward believes the well-built youngster, who has one more year at junior level, is capable of improvement.
Campbell comes in for the one unavailable player, Crosland Heath’s Jon Fleetwood.
Ward said: “He was the only one of the fairly low handicap players to beat his handicap in tough conditions and deserves his chance.”
It promises to be a tough baptism for Campbell against a Sheffield side which tops the table after four wins out of four.
Halifax-Huddersfield have managed only one success so far, by 21-15 against York at Crosland Heath early last month, and have lost three and had one wash-out.
Ward is hoping the three West End players, Brad Hardcastle, Joe Stott and Chris Bell, can play well on their home course but concedes that it will be tough to beat a Sheffield team with lower handicappers.
“I hope that we get stuck in and don’t disgrace ourselves,” he said.
