Team organiser Jane Parker said they had struggled for players on occasions this season and most of the squad were also involved with the Calderdale club in the West Yorkshire League, which holds its training sessions on a Thursday night.

“The games clash with our Calderdale training and we’ve decided we’d like to commit our energy into Calderdale for the coming season,” she said.

“Training is going to be much harder and will play a large part in team selection for matches. Players will have to fight for their position on court.”

In spite of their problems raising a team, Townies have lost just once in the league at Park Lane High School, Exley this season.

That was against Tigers, who have finished a distant second to them over the 10-game programme.

Jokers, battling with Townies for the runners-up spot behind Hi-Tech Cougars in the Monday league at North Bridge LC, Halifax, have helped them plug the gaps on a Thursday.

Paula Balmforth has not missed a game while Lee Davis, captain Parker and improving youngster Kirsty Parker have been other key players.

Townies and the other winners and runners up will receive their prizes at tomorrow’s league AGM in the bar area at Park Lane High School (7.0).
