CLIVE Austin and Cathy Ness won the Halifax Association’s Mixed Pairs competition at Kingston SC on Sunday with a 15-13 victory over Brian Hildred and Julie Marsden.

Hildred and Marsden took an early 4-0 lead and were well in control after moving further ahead to lead by 9-2.

Austin and Ness responded with four singles before Hildred and Marsden regained the initiative to lead by 13-8.

Austin and Ness won back the jack with a single at the next end, levelled with a four and took singles at the last two ends to run out and snatch a dramatic victory by 15-13.

Austin and Ness began their day by converting a 10-3 lead into a 15-10 victory over Pat Lonsdale and Phillip Brown, then led Malcolm and Sue Griffiths by 13-0 before winning by 15-6.

Hildred and Marsden trailed by 11-14 in their opening game against D. & J. Asquith before scraping through by 15-14 but enjoyed a more comfortable victory, by 15-6, in their second game. They were 5-7 down in their quarter-final against Maurice and Doreen Ormerod but ran out to win by 15-7.

In the semi-finals, while Austin and Ness were untroubled in defeating Dave Greenwood and Ann Hayes, Hildred and Ness trailed by 5-7 to Alwyn and Muriel Guide before winning by 15-9.
