HI-TECH Cougars moved a small step closer to retaining their North Bridge LC Monday League title this week.

It was the turn of top division sides to play at The Ridings and Carol Crowther’s team saw off the threat from Tigers by 30-17 in the final contest of the night.

That enabled them to pull another point clear of second-placed Townies, who were a player short and drew 17-17 with Yo-yos.

Hi-Tech and Tigers had weakened sides and fielded inexperienced players. The first half was fairly even with Carolyne Taylor and Libby Illingworth to the fore in attack for Tigers.

However, Illingworth was switched to wing attack in the second half and the move appeared to backfire, Hi-Tech running away with the contest.

Townies were without Kate Ineson (unavailable), Shelley Pyrah (injured) and Charlotte Lawless (ill) but drafted in Saleha Cooke to play in defence alongside Lee Davis.

That duo worked really hard and turned over lots of possession but Jane Parker and Elaine Douris didn’t shoot as well as usual.

Townies were 15-10 adrift at one stage but showed their character to grab a draw in a nail biting finish.

Jokers were the section’s top scorers in a 31-17 success over bottom team Pumas, who are favourites to go down alongside Arrows.

Arrows had one of their better winning opportunities but lost 19-13 to Towergate after trailing 8-6 at half time.

Ryburn continued their good run with a 16-11 win over third-placed Old Brodleians and are now just one point behind those rivals.

They included ex-Brods player Laura Kennedy at wing defence and a good team effort was spearhead by shooter Pauline Williamson and centre Pia Rattigan.

Unity, chasing a second successive promotion, are favourites to chase home 100 per cent side TAGS in Division Three.

Pam Morris’s side, sporting a new kit, beat Lee Green 23-17 with Alison Johnson’s accurate shooting the key.

They went above Tiger Vets, who suffered a third defeat of the season when going down 31-19 to Halifax.

Division Five’s top three, Twinkles 2, Dovetails and Rangers, had runaway wins.
