Daniel gives Valley the edge

Daniel Waddington spurred Willow Valley to success in Sunday’s Halifax-Huddersfield Union Handicap Team Championship at Woodsome Hall.

The 14-handicapper shot a 78 and nett 64 - the best of the day - to help his side total 328 to beat the host club and Hanging Heaton by just one shot.

Stephen Henry (82), Nigel Richardson (83) and Craig Harris (85) completed the Clifton course’s successful quartet.

Due to the very heavy rain on Saturday all bunkers were deemed ground under repair and therefore for handicap purposes the competition was a non qualifier.

Clubs have to field one player with a handicap not less than eight, one withnot less than 10, one with not less than 12 and one with not less than 14.

There are two changes to the Halifax-Huddersfield Union senior side for Sunday’s final Yorkshire Inter-District League match of the season against Harrogate at Knaresborough.

Plus four player Jamie Bower (Meltham) and scratch man James Ward (Dewsbury) return for unavailable pair Ed Battye (Bradley Park) and Ben Adamson (Crow Nest Park).

The return of Bower, who recently won the Midland Open by an 11-shot margin with Elland’s Nick Marsh third, is a big boost to the side as they again look to finish runners-up to Sheffield.

Halifax-Huddersfield beat East Riding 23-13 at Dewsbury 12 days ago and Mear is hopeful of another good performance prior to the Six Man Team Championship hosted by Teesside at The Wynard on the following Sunday.

Harrogate are bottom but team boss Chris Mear is mindful that Leeds were in a similar position when they left Halifax-Huddersfield with a bloody nose earlier this year.
