Calderdale were beaten 18-14 by Federation champions Mid-Cheshire on Sunday.
Each team had 12 winners but the four points for the overall aggregate win went to Mid-Cheshire by a 442-417 margin.
It means Calderdale’s last match against Rochdale on August 26 offers up intriguing possibilities. A 20-12 win would take them above Rochdale and make them runners-up but a reversal of that score could see them relegated to Division Two.
Calderdale’s away team found it hard going at Owley Wood S and SC, which had staged the British CGBA individual merit the day before.
They had one winner in each group of four jacks.
The returning Ian Smith, a left hander, raced into a 20-12 lead with the help of eight pairs and won 21-16. John Armitage (Elland WM) was tied at 17 before losing the last four ends.
In the second four, Smith’s Akroydon Victoria clubmate Gareth Coates, a newcomer to the side, lost to 14 but Barry Collinge (Elland WM) led all the way to win 21-16. Peter Stott (Todmorden) led 19 - 13 but Mid-Cheshire captain Alan Vickers then scored four pairs.
As the match went into its final stages, Gareth Swaine (Luddenden Foot) was stranded on 19, leaving captain Mark Regan (Brighouse Sports) to pick up Calderdale’s last point by 21-18.
Ian Booth was the biggest winner at Greetland - by 21-6 - and fellow county player Robert Hitchen, Phil Chalkley and homester Gordon Bradford all left their opponents on 14.
