Derby replay a fair call, says Heath boss

Heath coach Kevin Plant says he “has no problem” with tomorrow’s Yorkshire One derby replay at Old Brodleians.

The local rivals meet at Woodhead for a second time in little over a month after a serious injury to Heath’s Will Nicholson - coupled with an hour-long wait for an ambulance - forced the abandonment of the previous fixture just past the 60 minute mark.

Heath were winning 12-10 at the time, a position that in other circumstances might have proved decisive, but Plant insists he is happy to head back to Hipperholme for a fixture which will double as a fundraiser for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

“If it had been abandoned at that point due to the weather, the rules say the result would have stood,” said Plant.

“We certainly felt we were the dominant team that day.

“But I don’t have a problem with it; the priority at the time was the lad’s health and safety and it was unfortunate there was such a lengthy delay getting him proper treatment.

“It’s probably unfortunate for us in the sense that Brods have picked up some form since that game, getting some players back and winning matches.”

Heath are also stronger though, with Plant reeling off a list of names - Jeff Jones, James Watson, Martin Moana and Charlie Lomas - who should make the cut tomorrow.

“It’s been difficult for us to put the same 17or 18 together each week and we’ve probably suffered because of that,” said Plant, whose side are coming off a 39-31 loss at Bridlington.

“It’s going to be an interesting afternoon.”

Brods chairman Bruce Turner, whose side are riding high after three wins in a row, echoed Plant’s assessment, saying: “Both sides have found a little more form over the last few weeks.

“Many players have worn both jerseys over the years - there are several Heath players who spent their early days at Woodhead.

“Richard Cole at scrum half is the brother of our coach John, and Giles Hetherington plus Oliver Wilby also played for the Brods as juniors.”

Teenage winger Eddie Carter and Yorkshire Under 20s prop Alex Dawson both return to the Brods squad.
