Local darts ace Scott Waites finished runner-up in the men’s singles at the BDO Internation Open at Brean Sands holiday park in Somerset at the weekend.
Waites, formerly of Sowerby Bridge and Outlane and now living at Fixby, was beaten 6-3 in the final by Dutchman Jan Dekker but still earned a four-figure cheque.
Reigning Lakeside world champion Waites had powered past England’s Jamie Hughes 5-1 in the semi-finals after earlier wins over Ross Montgomery (4-3), Garry Thompson (4-1) and Josh McCarthy (4-2) in the last 32.
In the final Waites’s high-scoring form deserted him. Dekker went 3-0 up and Waites needed a 124 checkout to get in the match. Dekker won the next two and although Waites got back to 5-3, Dekker sewed up victory by winning the ninth set.
Pennine Housing carpenter Waites won his Lakeside crown just after Christmas by beating Tony O’Shea 7-1 in the final and he followed up by taking the his second Dutch Open title in January.
