Home sweet home as Hall land scratch title

Bradley Hall made home advantage pay by winning the Halifax, Huddersfield & District Union’s Scratch Team Championship on Sunday.

They lifted the Founders Trophy for the first time since 2007 by a comfortable 11 shots from defending champions Huddersfield in the John Eyre-sponsored competition.

West End were four shots further back in third.

Hall’s effort was spearheaded by Chris Lander. He shot a second round 67 and his 141 total was bettered only by Meltham’s plus-two handicapper Jamie Bower, who was in scintillating form with rounds of 66 and 69.

Lander received solid backing from Martin Cockroft (144), Andy Hare (146) and Andrew Whitworth (151) as Bradley Hall pulled away from Meltham and Huddersfield, who had been their nearest pursuers after the first round.

The bottom four teams on the day - Hebden Bridge, Outlane, Queensbury and Longley Park - were relegated to Division Two.

Union secretary John Lawrence said the event had run smoothly but the heat had made it hard work for players.

The experiment of having players teeing off simultaneously on the the first and 10th had been a success with those holes running parallel at the Holywell Green course.

It meant the competition was concluded in good time.
