FOURTEEN-year-old Katie Ormerod from Brighouse, has spent an action-packed weekend of competitive sport, proudly bringing home three medals in Snowboarding and Gymnastics.
On Saturday, Ormerod entered the British Snowboarding Slopestyle Championships at Xscape in Castleford. Slopestyle is a freestyle event, where competitors perform tricks in the air as well as on rails and boxes, and points are awarded by the judges for style and difficulty of the tricks performed.
Ormerod, who is studying on a Sports Scholarship at Hipperholme Grammar School, came first in her age group and first in the women’s group. She also won the “Jedi” award for performing the best trick on each line.
The following day Ormerod achieved further success when she took part in the Yorkshire Open Gymnastics competition held at the Diamonds Gymnastics Club in Halifax.
Ormerod performed in the floor, vault, bars and beam exercises achieving a remarkable third on the beam and fourth overall, despite recovering from a painful shoulder break.
Ormerod has been involved in Gymnastics since the age of four and started snowboarding at six. She competes regularly at regional and national level and has won many medals and trophies. She was recently selected as GB elite athlete for Snowboarding and hopes to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics.
“I have also been nominated to run with the Olympic Flame in 2012,” she added. “Hipperholme Grammar School is very supportive and let me have the time off as long as I catch up on all my studies.”
