Last wood title-clincher for cool Hanson

VALLEY Boys are Tuesday Evening Pairs champions in Halifax BC’s indoor leagues after an exciting climax to the season.

Arthur Robinson and Keith Hanson lost their 100 per cent record when they took on Brigands (Mary Moore and Stuart Andrews) but an 8-8 draw was enough to give them the title against opponents who also finished unbeaten, but were left to rue dropping a point to B & J (Barbara Gee, Joyce Shaw).

Early play was even at 3-3 with Robinson favouring long marks against Moore’s medium length jacks.

With Brigands lying two shots their skip Andrews inexplicably knocked off his team’s scoring woods to give Valley Boys the shot, for them to go into a 4-3 lead.

Moore and Andrews put that behind them, Moore leading to her usual high standard and receiving good support from Andrews to lead 8-7.

At the last end Moore bowled a two inch wood behind the jack. Hanson, with his last wood, rose to the occasion and bowled a perfect wood to finish one inch from the jack.

Third place is yet to be decided with Stuart’s Hardware, B & J and Virgos all in the running.

Sowerby are Wednesday Afternoon champions with Bradshaw second and Hebden Hotshots third. Hawthorns and Illingworth are the two teams to miss out.

Bradshaw (John Wedgwood, Jack Flaherty, Newman Fawley and Colin Horsfall) proved too strong for Likely Lads (Eileen Dovernor, Sheila Holbrook, Peter Grant, Jeff Dovernor).

At the second end Bradshaw scored eight shots and they followed up with a four a couple of ends later to run out 19-10 winners.

Hebden Hotshots (Brian Gunnell, Peter Drinkwater, Arthur Robinson, Wendal Adams) and Hawthorns (Bernard Farrar, Malcolm Edmondson, Barry Wright, Ernie Morris) both finished with 15 points but Hotshots had a better points difference and take the third spot.

In their final games, Hotshots beat bottom club Falstaffs (D. Thorpe, P. Walker, F. Smith, E. Bleasdale) by 19-3. Hawthorns needed a big win to beat Hotshots’ points difference, but were held to a 12-4 win by the other leading team, Illingworth (Pat McDonnell, Harold Maude, John Stewart, Derek Cawthra).

Madlams (Malcolm Griffiths, Stewart Baker, Mick Walker) caused one of the upsets of the season as they came from behind to beat leaders Clayton (Tony Riley, Paul Kaye, Paul Gill) in the Thursday Evening Triples.

Clayton led a tight game 11-9 going into the last end. Madlams were holding four shots before Clayton skip Gill bowled a brilliant wood to take shot. Madlams skip Walker knocked out Clayton’s scoring wood and Gill was short with his final wood for Madlams to win 13-11.

Clayton are still favourites to win the league as they have a game in hand on Madlams, who are also on 19 points.

Arriva Les Holmes, Mark McGorlick, Dale Holdsworth) are one point behind the top two.

Phoenix David Atkinson, David Ogden) have moved into top spot in the Friday Evening Pairs.

Muleas (Malcolm Griffiths, Pat Helliwell) found Hilltoppers (Tim Coleman, Michael Hutchinson) in sparkling form. Coleman led superbly and Hutchinson saved and then bowled in for additional shots when required. Hilltoppers won 11-10.
