Chris Mear is hoping practice will make perfect for his Halifax-Huddersfield Union side ahead of their crunch match against Teesside.

The teams meet at Barnard Castle GC on Sunday and Mear’s Yorkshire Inter-District League title contenders are making a special trip to play the course on Saturday.

“The players are all fired up for this crucial match that we must win to keep any chance of winning the league title,” said Mear.

Halifax-Huddersfield, usually also-rans in the league, have won all their three completed fixtures this summer.

However, two washouts means they are two points behind powerful Sheffield, who have won all their five matches.

The pair meet in the final contest at Halifax GC on Sunday, September 2 and Mear would be delighted if his dark horses were still in contention.

Halifax-Huddersfield are certainly in great heart after a stunning 29-7 thrashing of York at Meltham 12 days ago.

They led 8-4 after the morning foursomes and pressed home their advantage in the singles with a string of victories, spearheaded by Aaron Schnacke’s success over county player Martin Brown at the top of the order.

The Halifax-Huddersfield team shows three changes.

Meltham’s Jamie Bower comes in at the top of the order and Adam Cryer and Richard Broadley also return.

They replace West End’s Steve Martin, Meltham’s Graham McLean and Todmorden’s Michael Murray.

Bower is in top form, having retained the North of England Youths title at Midddlesbrough GC last week.

He posted scores of 67, 66, 66 and 68 for a 13 under par total of 267 to win by four shots.

Halifax-Huddersfield Union: Jamie Bower (Meltham), Aaron Schnacke (Huddersfield), Mathew Colcombe (Longley Park), Adam Cryer (Woodsome Hall), Mark Birkett (Halifax), Jamie Smith (Halifax), Dave Stafford (Todmorden), Richard Broadley (Huddersfield), Andy Shaw (Halifax Bradley Hall), Brad Tupman (Huddersfield), Ben Adamson (Crow Nest Park), Andy Wilford (Huddersfield).
