ELLAND’S Nick Marsh is the new Yorkshire Boys champion.
The youngster took the title by a four-shot margin in a 36-hole competition played in wet and windy weather at Hessle Golf Club.
Marsh, who switched from Elland Golf Club to Huddersfield for the current season, had rounds of 72 and 70 over the par 72 course to run out a convincing winner.
Second was Marsh’s Yorkshire and England Boys team-mate Matthew Fitzpatrick of Hallamshire GC, Sheffield, who had two rounds of 73.
The only other Halifax-Huddersfield Union player in the 71-strong field was Hanging Heaton’s Josh Morton, who had rounds of 82 and 79 to finisdh 33rd.
Marsh was maintaining his excellent form, having finished third in the Rudersdal Under 21 Junior Open in Denmark and then winning the 72 hole Welsh Open Youths’ Championship at the Bull Bay Golf Club, Anglesey by an eight-shot margin.
Halifax RLFC players Carl Gillespie (6) and Tony Anderson (12) won Bradley Hall’s fourball better ball event for the Darnton Cup on Saturday.
In poor conditions, they had a nett 66 to win by one point from two other pairs, Stuart Bradley (5) and Steve Crossley (17), and Peter Mason (6) and Tony Haigh (12).
THE Halifax-Huddersfield Union junior team play their fifth fixture of the season against East Riding at Allerthorpe Park GC on Sunday.
The fourth match - against Bradford at West Bradford last Friday - was washed out and the sides share the points.
