Old Rishworthians 5 Sheffield Medicals 27

Old Rishworthians suffered an opening day Yorkshire Two defeat after a nightmare opening to the game.

Medicals scored three tries in the opening 20 minutes and while Rishworthians then got their game together and played well, particularly in the second half, the damage was done.

The home side’s cause was also hampered by injuries to Damian Ball, Chris Flanagan, Gez Rollins and Joe Billing.

After 10 minutes of open running rugby from both teams Medicals camped in the Rishworthian half and with pressure building scored their first points from a scrum 20 metres out when the scum half went over.

This was soon followed by a try in the corner when Medicals used their pace and good handling skills to move the ball wide. Following an infringement on the halfway Line the quick thinking visitors punished the home side for turning their backs to the ball by taking a tap penalty and running in their third try.

Rishworthians moved play into the visitors half and were rewarded when outside half Josh Kelly’s crossfield kick was gathered by Lee Atkinson who crossed the line in the corner.

Medics converted two of their tries and kicked a penalty to give them a 22-5 half time lead

Rishworthians improved considerably after the break where excellent defending and great spirit from the whole team made life very difficult for the visitors.

The only further points were a last minute try going for Medicals following a kick and chase.
