West End green staff member Aaron Schnacke made a bright start to the Halifax-Huddersfield Winter Alliance season yesterday with partner Adam Walker.

The pair, playing as Huddersfield independent members because the Fixby club is not in the Alliance, shared the pro-am honours at outpost club Hanging Heaton.

The big-hitting Schnacke, from Mytholmroyd, birdied four of the front nine and two of the back nine while Walker had a three-pointer on the 10th.

Their 43 point total was matched by the home club’s Gareth Moore and Paul Ratcliffe (5) in dry, cloudy conditions with a moderate breeze which reduced as the day progressed.

Twenty 23 pairs took part and the five pro-am combinations were out-scored by some am-am combinations with two duos bagging 45 points.

Outlane’s Nick Hirst (11) and Dave Knapton (12) beat Luke Pilkington (3) and Oliver Shaw (7) of Crosland Heath on countback.

Hirst had a nett eagle on the long par four third hole second time round and Shaw had a gross eagle on the short par four 14th.

Bradley Hall’s Michael Appleyard was welcomed as the president of the Alliance for this season and the next event is at Meltham on Tuesday, 15 October.
