ILLINGWORTH under 14s continued their impressive start in the Yorkshire Junior League when they beat Shaw Cross Sharks 46-14 at Mason Green.
Illingworth took the game to their opponents from the start with a strong forward drive from Brandan Stephenson which enabled the ball to be passed to Jack Lund who scored in the corner, Jake Wardle missed the tricky conversion from the touchline.
Shaw Cross were trying to break through Illingworth’s defence but strong tackling from Harry Hirst and Lee Craven stopped them in their tracks before Jack Bruce was next to score when some neat passing between several players enabled him to power over.
Shaw Cross were unable to get through the strong defensive wall led by Chris O’Farrell and Cammy Graham on the wings and that laid the platform from which Luke Sainsbury crossed when, after receiving the ball from the base of the scrum, he ran around the covering defenders to score in the corner for a 12-0 lead.
A mistake from the kick off enabled Shaw Cross to work a move from their scrum and from their next play the ball their acting half scored a converted try under the posts to bring it back to 12-6.
Declan Sykes was proving to be a handful with his strong running and from his good field position the ball was spun out to the flanks where Christian Ackroyd scored the first of his three tries.
The home side were working the top flank with great effect now and when the ball was passed along the line to Tom Helliwell he dived over to score in the corner for a 20-6 half time lead.
Illingworth made four substitutions at the break to rest some tired legs and it was one of these Danny Cutts who was making some telling breaks and strong tackles to help his team.
However, it was Shaw Cross who scored next when their centre outpaced the home defence and after a quick play the ball they scored near the posts,
Any thoughts of a comeback were soon dispelled when two quick tries from Illingworth killed the game off.
Firstly, Jake Wardle jinked and danced his way over under the posts and added his first conversion and then good running from Tommy Lovelady set up field position for Jake Wardle to put a kick to the corner for Christian Ackroyd to score his second try and open up a commanding 30-10 lead.
They repeated the same move three minutes later when Jake Wardle again found Christian Ackroyd with a cross field kick for him to score his hat trick try in the corner and a magnificent touchline conversion from Jake Wardle stretched the lead to 36-10.
Isaac Farrell was having his usual barnstorming game in defence and attack and when he linked up with Thomas Fennelly on the wing the ball was fed out to Sean Robins who outpaced the covering defenders to score in the corner.
Shaw Cross never gave up and their strong running second rower made a telling break and laid the platform for their stand off to score before Jack Lund ran through the middle of the defence from the halfway line to score next to the posts Jake Wardle rounding things off with the conversion.
