Smiths shine at soggy Ogden

The Halifax pair scored 43 stableford points in an am-am section which produced some good scoring and a tight finish in unusual playing conditions.

The start of play was delayed by an hour due to waterlogged fairways with teeing up as relief from casual water impossible.

Once conditions improved enough for play to get under way the day was fine with plenty of sunshine and a light, cool breeze.

The greens, although wet and very soft, were very good and with a couple of unusual tee positions scoring was good.

The green keepers were commended for enabling the competition to take place.

Jamie Smith, who won the local Union stroke play at Bradley Hall in July, was playing off plus one but he was not the lowest handicapper in the field.

That honour went to England amateur Jamie Bower from Meltham off plus four.

He and Graham McMahon (5) had to settle for joint third place on 41 points with Dave Knapton (13) and Eddie Casper (10) of Outlane.

Sandwiched between those pairs and the winners were Crow Nest Park’s Mark Campbell (8) and Richard Langley-Webb (10) with 42 points.

The pro-am scoring was not as good with ex-Halifax player Tim Pollard and Mick Appleyard (4) of Bradley Hall winning with 37 points.

The last Alliance of the year is at Hebden Bridge GC on Tuesday, November 29 when Christmas dinner will be served.
