Harrogate Pythons 44
Halifax Vandals 0
Halifax Vandals, high on confidence after last weeks derby win against Halifax, came back down to earth with a bump following a performance that has left captain Andrew Murray in no doubt that the challenge of Yorkshire Four will be a tough one, especially on away days.
Already missing key players, the game was only two minutes old when powerful young centre Luke sutcliffe withdrew with a shoulder injury. Chances came and went for Vandals who saw Tom Crowther, Brett Swiffen and then Matt Farrar held up inches from the line.
As these chances passed the absence of Sutcliffe was underlined as the Harrogate back line scored a breakaway try that was followed by a penalty for an 8-0 halftime lead.
The second half was only just underway when Harrogate capitalised on a mistake to race clear and score under the posts. This score demoralised the Vandals and resulted in several breakaway tries from the lively Harrogate backs that wasn’t helped following the withdrawal of the ever dependable Drew Drake and flying winger Tom Crowther.
Despite the disappointment at the final whistle there was heart to be taken from the spirited displays of Craig Sim and Paul Jowett.
