Scott Waites made a much bolder bid to retain his Dutch Open title at the weekend than he had his BDO world crown last month.
The Pennine Housing worker, who lives just over the Calderdale border in Fixby, was beaten 3-2 by Scotland’s Ross Montgomery in the final in Veldhoven.
After working his way through a field of 2434 men in the largest open tournament in the world, Waites collected 2,500 euros for his efforts.
Waites had won the Dutch crown 12 months earlier and in 2007 - his first major success.
The weekend’s result was a big improvement for 36-year-old ‘Scotty-2-Hotty’, who crashed 3-0 to eventual runner-up Alan Norris at Frimley Green after a troubled preparation to his BDO title defence.
