Andrew Whitworth justified strong favouritism to win Tuesday’s Halifax, Huddersfield & District Union’s Seniors Championship at Woodsome Hall.

Bradley Hall’s Whitworth, newly qualified in the seniors ranks, shot a 76 to win by two shots from home club player Steve Selbie with several previous winners of the title behind.

Whitworth has won the Union’s individual stroke play championship a record 11 times since 1983 and still plays off a handicap of one.

Robin Marchant (80), John Oxley (80) and Allen Humphries (81) formed the winning team from Fixby and age group prizes went to Humphries, club mate Jonathan Heyes, Woodsome’s Gary Blakeley and Halifax’s Jim Nixon.

The event was sponsored by former Union president Phil Tatlock in memory of his wife Liz.
