Ninth wicket pair secure stunning success

Zafar Khan and Glen Morrison produced a stunning display of late order batting to power Northowram Fields to an astonishing Central Yorkshire League Championship clash victory at home to Liversedge.

Fields were staring at a defeat after the visitors had posted 242 for nine. The hosts were struggling at 120 for six with overs running out and the threat of rain looming.

They would have been pleased to earn a point for reaching three-quarters of Liversedge’s total. However, with three overs to go and 54 still needed. Khan and Dewsbury RLFC coach Morrison took matters into their own hands.

Both struck unbeaten half centuries with Khan finding the boundary through mid-wicket to score the winning runs.

Illingworth bounced back from their disappointing performance at Pool with a nine-wicket win over Skipton in Division Two of the Airedale and Wharfedale League.

Skipton made a solid start and reached 46 off 13 overs. Liam Kelly then struck with a four wicket burst, which included removing ex-Bradford League player Richard Nichols for 24, and Skipton were reeling at 63 for four.

Iqbal Khan and Steve Carling tried to rebuild things with a partnership of 44, but Stephen Cook removed the dangerous Khan, and claimed four more victims to finish with figures of five for 19 and give Illingworth a target of 142, which was slightly below par.

After last week’s batting collapse at Pool, Illingworth were hoping for better things, and James Lawton and Danny Gibbs ensured that there would be no repeat by putting on an opening stand of 120.

Lawton’s 61 included three sixes and five fours, and although he departed with the target in sight, Gibbs sealed the victory with two boundaries in succession bringing up his own half-century.

Illingworth’s next opponents are Adel, who scored 298 yesterday and will be looking to climb the table after an indifferent start.

Yorkshire spinner James Middlebrook hit a superb 128 to propel New Farnley to a 165-run win at Lightcliffe.

Middlebrook struck four sixes and 13 fours as he shared an opening stand of 190 with Mattie Good (79) which provided the foundations for a New Farnley total of 294 for eight.

Young left-arm spinner Daanyaal Ahmed (4-69) and Suleman Khan (3-52) were the pick of the Lightcliffe bowlers.

Lightcliffe were bowled out for 129 with only Rhys Jowett (66) offering prolonged resistance as Ian Fisher (3-16) and Nick Johnson (3-31) sealed their team’s victory.

Bowling Old Lane continued their run of good results with an emphatic nine-wicket win at Brighouse in Division Two.

Opener Abid Alishan led the successful pursuit of Brighouse’s 206 all out with an unbeaten 110. He struck a six and 16 fours and was joined in a second-wicket stand of 158 by Mustafa Bhatti (60no).

Mohammad Khurshid (59) was the top scorer for Brighouse who faded after a promising start against the bowling of Ahsan Alishan (4-67).

Walsden’s Joe Gale claimed for for 34 and scored 48 while Jake Hooson knocked 63 in their two wicket Central Lancashire League win over Clifton at Scott Street.

Ramsbottom moved up to second place in the Lancashire League after a 126 run win over Todmorden at Acre Bottom.

Callum Kay batted through the home sides innings for a career best unbeaten 98 which contained four boundaries. Kay put on 130 for the third wicket with professional Daryn Smit (32) and 56 for the fourth with Martin Cropper (38). Dale Gabriel also chipped in with an unbeaten 22.

Professional Bilawal Bhatti took all four Ramsbottom wickets at a cost of 62 runs as the home side closed on 241 for four.

Simon Read (3-39) removed Simon Newbitt (3), Freddie Priestley (12) and Bhatti (20) with Smit cleaning up the tail to finish with six for 22. Ben Pearson made 19, Ben Sutcliffe and Elliott Gilford 17 apiece and Thomas Whittaker 13 for Todmorden
