Course designer Sue steps down after ten years
AFTER 10 years at the helm, Sue Benson, Bramham International Horse Trials course designer will be stepping down.
This year's event will be the swansong for Bramham's longest serving cross country course designer as she turns her attention to the design challenge of the 2012 Olympics.
Taking her place will be eventing legend Ian Stark. The four times Bramham winner who has also won medals at three Olympic games has been gaining a reputation as a course designer.
Bramham Event Director Nicholas Pritchard said: "Ian was an obvious choice for us – not only because of his talent and feel for design as a former rider but of course Bramham has been such a happy hunting ground for him in the past."
During her 10 years at the three day event, held at Bramham Park, near Leeds, Mrs Benson has made a number of changes to keep the course fresh, including altering the start and finish as well as an annual revamp of the spectator favourite water jump.
Last year's was hailed as her best yet with previously unused parts of park worked into the course. This year, building on that, over half the course will be on new terrain.
Mr Pritchard said: "Sue has been one of Bramham's best assets in recent years. Her attention to detail, knowledge of the Park and flair for design have ensured the riders want to come back to Bramham again and again while keeping our visitors entertained with a real test of horsemanship. I'm certainly looking forward to her unveiling of this year's course with the new route and fences. It has always been the policy here at Bramham to keep rotating the Course Designers and Sue is our longest serving but with the added pressure of 2012 and her other events, it was decided we are ready for a change."
This year's Bramham International Horse Trials takes place on June 11 – 14.
