Parish Cup holders Copley face lowly foes in the first round

COPLEY will have to win at least two away games if they are to retain the Parish Cup this summer.

Mohammed Seraj’s side, who beat Booth in a see-saw final at Southowram last August, have been paired with the team which finished bottom of the Towergate Halifax League in 2011, Augustinians, in the first round.

If successful at Laund Hill, they will then travel to meet the winners of the clash between top flight Warley and Division Two side Outlane.

Booth, who lifted the trophy in 2009, will be fancied to account for last year’s Division Two champions Wibsey Park Chapel with home advantage.

However, Robert Laycock’s 2011 league runners-up could then face a tricky trip to the side which finished immediately below them last year, Thornton.

SBCI, the 2010 winners, start with a trip to Oxenhope while champions Triangle, who won the cup in 2008, are at Shelf in the first round.

Sowerby St Peters are the holders of the second teams’ Crossley Shield, beating Warley in a replay last year after the pair had tied the first meeting.

Sowerby will host Mytholmroyd while Warley head up to Outlane.

First round matches are on Sunday, April 29 with a reserve date of Sunday, May 13. Second round games are on Sunday, May 20 with a reserve date of Sunday, May 27.

HALIFAX League clubs agreed to a rise in league fees at an extraordinary general meeting which took place before Tuesday’s monthly meeting.

It will cost £90 to field first and second teams in the league this year plus £30 for a Sunday Section team.

Clubs who play their senior cricket outside the Halifax League will pay £35 to play in the Sunday Section.

The increases are modest but chiefs hope it will prevent the league recording a third successive loss.

In future, league fees will be fixed at the annual general meeting.

League chiefs have also simplified the process for clubs trying to gain admission to the Halifax League.

A sub committee is to be formed to deal with enquiries and decide whether applicants meet the minimum entry requirements, with regard to such things as facilities and junior set-ups.

It is aimed at avoiding situations such as happened with Girlington, whose application to join the league got as far as the annual meeting before it become clear they did not have two junior teams.

Applicants will be given advice and help on how to meet standards.
