Rugby league: Ovenden's tame exit

Ovenden 0 West Bowling 24 National Cup

OVENDEN will be looking to consign this defeat to the dustbin as they crashed out of the National Cup with barely a whimper against a tactically superior West Bowling outfit.

Bowling played down the slope in the first half and used the conditions to their advantage as they opened up a commanding 16-0 lead at the break.

Ovenden were unable to make the same impact and the nearest they came to bothering the scorers was when they dropped the ball over the line.

On another occasion they had a three man overlap but the ball went to ground.

With the hosts struggling to impose themselves on the proceedings, Bowling duly wrapped the tie up with two late tries.

"There are no excuses, we were beaten hands down," said disappointed coach Steve Taylor.

"Fair play to West Bowling because they were smart and played the conditions superbly while we tried to play too much football and came unstuck.

"It was just one of those days and to be honest there are not many positives I can take out of it.

"It will be a question now of forgetting about it and making sure we are ready to take on Shaw Cross Sharks next weekend."
