Challenge is too much for Ovenden

Ovenden were beaten 34-4 by Milford in Saturday’s RL Challenge Cup second qualifying round game on the 3G pitch at Kirkstall.

However, they never gave in and were well in the game up to the break.

From the start they were under attack but a loose pass enabled Luke Sutcliffe to race 50 meters and into the home 22. The chance was wasted due to a poor pass.

Milford took the lead when, after Matt Short had been sin binned in what Ovenden thought was a poor decision by the referee, a short pass resulted in a try near the posts for an easy conversion.

The visitors were defending well with Dean Robertshaw and Matt Turner leading the way and when Milford again lost the ball Luke O’Mara, who was making some good runs, set the platform for Pete Williams to score.

Milford increased their lead whe na long pass was taken for a try and the conversion was added.

In the second half Ovenden handicapped by leg and ankle injuries to O’Mara and Matt Dawson but they kept up their attack. Gareth English and Turner were both held close to the line.

The home side moved further in front with a long range try and were out of reach when they won the race to a kick through.

Two more tries were added to send Milford comfortably through to the next round.
