Halifax prop Sam Barlow has ruled himself out of Sunday’s Championship fixture at Workington town.

The former Siddal junior failed to make the cut for last week’s 18-10 opening day win over Sheffield Eagles and is now struggling with a foot injury.

“Sam’s declared himself unfit,” said Harrison, who was hoping to finalise his matchday squad at Wednesday night’s training session.

“It’s the foot he had surgery on last year, he’s seen the physio and he’s going to see the doctor and discuss it with him.”

Barlow will be Fax’s second confirmed absentee this weekend, with young forward Ian Davies, who effectively took Barlow’s place against the Eagles, sidelined with rib cartilage damage.

“Ian’s out and it’s difficult to say how long for,” said Harrison.

“It’s his ribs so it could be one week, it could be 10.

“It’s disappointing, because he was having a pretty good game when he had to come off.

“The positive is that he’s proved to us he can play at that level and he’s proved to himself that he can play at that level.

“I think that mentally, that is a huge hurdle he has cleared.

“I’m sure we will see him again this year.”

Halifax’s under 23 side will play a pre-season fixture at Leigh on Thursday night, with centre Mick Nanyn and utility back Anthony Bowman both poised for their first starts of 2013.

For Nanyn, it will be his first game for more than a year after a knee reconstruction.

“I’m pleased for Mick, he’s worked hard and he just needs to play now,” said Harrison.

“It’s going to be tough for him to force his way into the backline, but the sooner he gets some games under his belt the more chance he has.”
