National Cup glory for Siddal

Siddal's all-conquering under 15s have scaled new heights by beating the country's top under 16 sides to win the XAMAX BARLA National Youth Cup.

They were 28-8 winners against West Hull in one of three junior finals held at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats’ ground on Saturday.

Prop Tom Holroyd stole the show with a hat-trick of tries to take the man of the match award.

But there was plenty more in Siddal’s performance for watching members of the club’s Conference-topping first team to admire.

Martin Scrimshaw’s side won the under 14s competition last year and their coach pitched them back in against year-older opposition to give them some tougher competition.

They proved up to the task, taking control against tough and resilient opponents in the sunshine.

West Hull were quickest out of the blocks, taking the game to Siddal and it was no surprise when they took the lead on four minutes through centre Robbie Storey.

Both packs battled to take control and Siddal edged two points ahead after 18 minutes when sub Alex Oldroyd drove over and Riley Dean kicked the first of four goals from five attempts.

Siddal were in front from then on. Holroyd went over after 28 minutes and made it a double five minutes later, Dean’s goals helping to open up an 18-4 lead.

West Hull continued to press but were held by Siddal’s defence.

The sides exchanged tries in a three minute spell after the break.

On 51 minutes centre Aaron Metcalfe went over for Siddal but Dean was unable to convert.

Hooker Jordan Webster responded to make it 22-8 but West Hull were unable to make further inroads and Holroyd sealed a great day for the club when he completed his treble from the final play of the game.
