Siddal sting Hornets again

Siddal have a four point lead at the top of the National Conference League after a hard-fought 22-16 success at Wath Brow Hornets on Saturday.

They were completing a double over one of their main rivals for honours, having won the home fixture 30-4 in May.

It completed a hat-trick of successes in Cumbria this season for Gareth Greenwood’s men, who had previously won at Kells and Egremont.

Stand off Shaun Garrod was again their star man, even though he was unable to add to his 15-try haul in 2016.

Second row Mark Boothroyd grabbed a brace of tries and winger Gareth Blackburn and replacement Jack Georgiou also touched down.

Gavin Stead, deputising for Freddie Walker at fullback, kicked three goals.

Wath Brow, who had lost to the other contenders for top spot, Leigh Miners Rangers, in their previous outing, managed tries from backs Dean Rooney, Curtis Teare and Peter Caddy. Fullback Cole Walker Taylor kicked two goals.

Siddal have seven matches left, starting at Lock Lane on Saturday.

Elland were crushed 80-4 by hosts Shaw Cross Sharks in Division One.

Sharks had ex-Great Britain player Lee Gilmour at loose forward. The former Wigan, Bradford and St Helens player started his career at Sharks.

Bottom side Elland trailed 58-0 at half time, winger Oliver Fairbank eventually crossing for a try.

Elland are at home to leaders Thatto Heath Crusaders on Saturday.
