Halifax have flatly denied receiving any approach from Super League strugglers Salford for highly-rated forward Sam Barlow.

Frenzied speculation over the weekend claimed the Reds had offered a transfer fee and the former Castleford hooker Wayne Godwin in a bid to land the former Siddal junior.

It is only a matter of weeks since Barlow signed a new two year deal at the Shay, apparently after rejecting approaches from both Salford and Fax’s Championship rivals Featherstone.

“We have not had any discussions of any kind with Salford or any other Super League club regarding Sam Barlow,” said Fax director Ian Croad, who said Barlow’s contract does not include an automatic top flight get-out clause in the first 12 months.

“It’s simple; As far as we are concerned Sam is a Halifax player for the next two seasons, end of story.

“I have no idea how these rumours start but we are building a team to win trophies, not dismantling one.”

On the field, Featherstone lost their second Grand Final in three years when they were beaten by Sheffield in Sunday’s Championship decider.

It was Rovers’ second showpiece reverse of the year after losing to Fax in July’s Northern Rail Cup final.
