On trial winger Freddy Walker is chasing a permanent deal with Halifax after terminating his deal with Super League neighbours Huddersfield.
Walker is a Calderdale junior, having come through the ranks with Elland before eventually turning professional with the Giants.
But the 20 year old, who performed well enough at wing and full back in Huddersfield’s under 20 side last season to earn a fleeting first team debut against Castleford, is a casualty of the move to under 19s reserve sides in the top flight.
“I am eligible to play under 20s in the Championship, but not 19s in Super League,” said Walker, who turned in a solid 80 minutes on the flank in the pre-season opener at Keighley.
“Because of all the changes with the reserves I terminated my contract and asked if I could come here on trial.
“I trained with the reserves for a few weeks and then got moved up to the first team.
“I’ve been training well and it was nice to get a game on Boxing Day.
“I found it physically tougher, even if it was a bit slower.
“But I loved it.”
Walker’s next move is dependent on Shay boss Karl Harrison, but the player himself is clear on his own ambitions.
“It’s about stepping down a level to try and step up and play first team rugby,” said Walker, who was a scholarship player with Harrison’s former club, Salford, as a teenager.
“I’m just hoping to stay here now, it’s my local club and they’re a good set of lads.
“I’d like to earn myself a contract.
“I thought I had a decent game on the wing, so hopefully I can make the most of the opportunity.”
Halifax are running a supporters coach to Dewsbury for Sunday’s pre season fixture.
The bus will leave the Shay at 1.30 and seats are priced at £8 for adults and £4 for juniors.

Wakefield Wildcats have signed Leeds prop Brad Singleton on a two-month loan deal.
The 20-year-old Cumbrian has been brought in to add strength to the Wildcats’ pack and today completed his first training session with his new team-mates ahead of the club’s pre-season camp in Portugal.
