Halifax have confirmed they will kick off their pre-season with a high-profile game at Super League side Castleford on Boxing Day, with a noon kick off.
The game, which will serve as a testimonial for the Tigers’ long-serving prop Craig Huby, will be the first meeting between the sides since Brent Sherwin’s golden point drop goal gave Castleford victory in a Challenge Cup classic in 2009.
“We wanted to test ourselves,” said Fax’s joint chief executive Ian Croad.
“Castleford are a good side and they’re one of the teams we could be playing in the next 18 months if the changes to the Super League structure are ratified.”
Fax will follow that up with a visit to Championship rivals Featherstone on Sunday, January 19, with proposed games against Keighley on January 12 and Leigh on February 9 also in the pipeline, although neither of those fixtures has been confirmed.
The timing of the Leigh fixture, a week after the 2013 season was officially underway, suggests that rumours of the demise of the Northern Rail Cup could turn out to be accurate.
