Leaders are too strong for Elland

Elland went to leaders East Leeds in Division Two of the National Conference with a weakened side and put in a creditable patchy performance against the league leaders.

The visitors gave the leaders too much respect early on and were 18-0 after eight minutes.

Once they got settled they started causing problems for the big home team.

On the back of some good drive by Ben Bottomley and Ethan Ingham Taylor chipped over and Dean Avis gathered to send in Taylor and he added the conversion to make it 18-6.

Elland scored again when the full back fumbled a Taylor bomb and he found the Jack Fairbank in support and Taylor converted to make it 18-12.

Elland nearly scored again when Junaid Malik made a break following a move from the scrum and was tackled in to touch by the corner flag.

Elland allowed the big home side to work down field and the referee awarded a penalty close to the line and the home side scored from a quick tap to take the half time score in at 22-12.

The home side scored on the back of needless penalties and when the ball was switched wide the cover could not get there to make the score 26-12.

Elland upped the ante and played some nice rugby and a strong surge by Ingham just saw him held up short of the line. Bottomley plunged over from the resultant play the ball following a neat ball from Webb at hooker and Taylor converted for 26-18.

Elland knocked on and the home hooker was quickest to react and pick up the loose ball to scoot over for a converted try to make the score 32-18.

The home hooker was over again near the side of the posts for a converted try to make it 38-18.

Elland hit back immediately with Fairbank and Taylor linking on the blind side from the scrum to send teenage centre Tom Harnett in at the corner to make it 38-24. Harnett scored a fine solo try after great back line play by Bottomley and Malik to make the score 38-30.

The home side scored the final try to make it 42-30.

Elland were best served by Bottomley and Jorge Fairbank, who in a stand out performance for a 17 year old.
