Scotland have added Widnes’ Halifax-born prop Ben Kavanagh to their provisional World Cup squad.

The 25-year-old former Siddal junior, who qualifies for Scotland through his Glaswegian grandmother, will help plug the gap caused by the withdrawal of former Australian Test front rower Keith Galloway through injury.

Kavanagh, who joined the Vikings from Wigan in 2008, has played in all but five of their 30 league and cup matches this season.

Scotland coach Steve McNamara is due to announce his 23-man squad next week.
