Illingworth emphatically dispatched visitors Underbank 60-6 as they continued their quest for the Division Two title at Mason Green.

It took the home side just three minutes to open their account.

A last tackle kick from Rangers’ scrum half Adam Lodge was fielded on his own line by winger Kieran Nicholson, who beat a couple of tacklers and slipped a neat inside ball to fullback Luke Sutcliffe, who raced away to touch down under the posts. Nicholson converted.

Sutcliffe was on hand again five minutes later, as Andrew McElroy and Andrew Laheney set up the position for a try in the left hand corner.

The lead was stretched to 14 points with 11 minutes on the clock, Laheney and McElroy again involved in the approach play, with Ben Harris providing the final pass for Jack Bradbury to dart over from 15 yards.

Moments later Graham Dobson made a good break from his own half and Sutcliffe sent Leigh King under the posts. Nicholson’s conversion made it 20-0.

Laheney forced his way over from a Dobson tap penalty and Nicholson converted.

Two further tries before the break put the result beyond doubt. Brett Steele forced his way through a number of attempted tackles, following good work from McElroy and Harris, and Nicholson got his second after Ash Ainley had made good yards in centre field. Conversions to both made it 38-0 at the half.

Underbank scored a converted try four minutes after the break but normal service was resumed when half backs Harris and McElroy created the chance for Laheney to grab his second wide on the left.

McElroy was next to cross, seizing on Dobson’s pass, and Illingworth hit 50 with 13 minutes left, good handing from Harris and Laheney setting up Nicholson for his second close to the left hand touchline. The winger’s towering conversion made it 52-6.

Dobson’s astute kick over the defence created the next try for King and Laheney secure his hat-trick after Dobson and Harris had put the centre into space 15 yards out.
