Sykes looks to SBCI’s improvers to fill void

SBCI skipper Jamie Sykes is banking on the club’s up-and-coming players to help fill the void following the loss of Jamie Summerscales.

Summerscales, last year’s Parish Cup final man of the match and the only player to score 1,000 runs in Halifax League games in 2012, has returned to Barkisland. The 32-year-old has also played at Todmorden and Milnrow.

Sykes, reappointed skipper of last season’s league and Parish Cup winners, admitted Summerscales departure was “a massive loss”. However, he believes SBCI have enough players on an upward curve to restrict the damage.

“Hopefully players like Sam Hinchcliffe and Tom Wood can step up to the mark with the bat along with one or two from the second team.

“Over the last two or three seasons we have all scored runs and supported each other down the order.”

Sykes said Summerscales remained an SBCI player at heart and he expected him to return. However, his exit for the time being hadn’t come as a total surprise.

“Every season you expect him to go because he is a class player. “He always gets calls from other clubs but has wanted to help SBCI.

“With us winning the double he possibly wants to test himself at a higher standard again but he will come back.”

Sykes, an ex-Barkisland player himself, believes Summerscales may feel he has unfinished business at the Woodfield club. He said Summerscales’ runs had dried up after a good start in his previous spell there.

“There are better bowlers and wickets in the Huddersfield League and I’m sure he would like to try to score 1,000 runs in a season there.”

SBCI start indoor nets next month and while they largely rely on home-grown talent, Sykes said one or two potential new signings had expressed an interest in attending.

Halifax League side Jer Lane have been drawn away to Scholes and Barkisland will be at home to Hartshead Moor in the Heavy Woollen Cup.
