Trabucco draw the first blood

Halifax anglers fishing under the Trabucco ROK banner put in an impressive shift in the first of the Tri-Cast Calder teams of four event on the Calder and Hebble canal at Brighouse with their Gold and Blue teams tied in first place and four anglers making the top six individual placings.

Stu Campbell won the day from the peg next to Anchor Bridge on Brighouse Market place where, despite frustration at several losing perch, he kept his cool to land roach, perch and skimmers on worm, bread, bloodworm and caster.

The victory was one of a trio of section wins for the Halifax Gold team with Paul McMillan securing third overall in the match from the Match length where he snared a bream which together with roach and perch gave him a level 4lbs.

Dividing them was Bryn Meade for Tri Cast Calder Red who picked off some of the recently stocked skimmer bream and roach at the first peg on Kosset for 5lbs 3oz.

Halifax Blue’s Martin Taylor was fourth from the Market Place with 3lbs 13oz knocking Steve Crossley (Maver North West) into fifth with 3lbs 8oz and there was a three way tie in sixth for Halifax Blue’s Daz Kershaw, Maver North West’s Derek Bowers and Tri-Cast Calder’s Mike Dobson who all weighed 2lbs 11oz.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for many of the 44 strong field. Unfortunately the fish that were stocked into Kosset were bunched at one end and those on the Pop Shop failed to show at all. The section was won with six ounces which for those unlucky enough to draw there was a real slap in the face.

The Deep Water length was no better with Halifax Gold’s Gary Smith walking the section from an end peg with 2lbs 6oz, more than 2lbs ahead of the next angler.

Winter fishing on canals is an iffy game and organisers have done right to break the match into eight sections which at least gives them the opportunity to move pegs to another length.

When anglers are competing in micro-sections it really does not matter which lengths are used, they are still faced with the same challenge - beating five others who they are lined up with.

Team result: 1= Trabucco ROK Halifax Gold and Blue 19; 3 Maver North West Black; 4= Tri Cast Calder Black, Bloodworm and Three Jokers 17.

Tri-Cast Calder pair Keith Marshall and Craig Ellis left it late to cement victory in the Thornhill Pairs series. A late perch for Marshall saw the scales tip back in their favour and they won by three points. Trabucco ROK Halifax pair John Meredith and Stu Campbell pushed them close with John Holdsworth and Warren McLeavy (Maver North West) making it a hat-trick for Calderdale sides.
