A wait of almost half a century is over for Walsden, who clinched the Central Lancashire League title yesterday.

Chris Dewhirst’s side beat visitors Radcliffe by seven wicket to ensure the silverware returns to Scott Street for the first time since 1964.

It means today’s final fixture at home to second-placed Heywood will be a victory party for the club.

Dewhirst’s side, who have lost only twice in the league this season, were keen to wrap up the championship yesterday and overseas ace Ranil Dhammika again came up trumps.

The Sri Lankan took eight for 39 to dismiss Radcliffe for 94 and was at the crease with Nick Barker when the winning run was scored, James Rawlinson having earlier hit 29.

Dhammika, who is returning to Walsden next season, has taken 120 wickets in 2012, a club record in limited overs cricket, eclipsing Ces Wright’s 116 in 1969.
