The votes have been counted and we can reveal that 19-year-old Kathy Haigh is our 2008 Web Idol.

Kathy, from Lee Mount, Halifax, received a massive 45% of the total votes cast for her rendition of Anastacia's Left Outside Alone.

Kathy clocked up a staggering 35,519 votes in total to land the title and the first prize of a day in the studios of Calder Recordings, Mytholmroyd, producing a top-quality CD worth £1,000.

She also receives a DAB digital radio, supplied by Yorkshire Radio.

Kathy, a performing arts student at Kirklees College, was at college surrounded by her friends when her mum telephoned her with the news that she had won.

"Everyone just started screaming. I was so happy. I can't believe it, especially that so many people voted for me."

The teenager has always enjoyed singing as part of her course and also had singing lessons for a time.

"I would like to take singing further and possibly get a career out of it so this is a great opportunity for me. I can't wait to spend a day in the recording studios."

In the end it was an all-female 1-2-3. Sarah Teagle of Sowerby Bridge, who sang Warwick Avenue, battled Kathy all the way. She led for much of the final round but finished second with 26,653 votes - a 34% share of all votes cast.

And 10% (8,220 votes) was enough to earn Zoe Jones of Halifax third place for her take on Celine Dion's Think Twice.

Sarah and Zoe also each receive DAB digital radios thanks to Yorkshire Radio.

More than 77,000 votes were cast during the week-long final round. Thank you to everyone who made their choice.

Unfortunately Westlifebird I don't think you can blame the people of Halifax for the outcome (which incidentally I don't think is a bad one) - I think the 2 contestants at the top have pretty much voted themselves into their final positions (given the number of votes) and must both have done pretty much nothing other than vote for themselves for the last 7 days solidly!!

In response to #5, I know for a fact that Sarah refused to vote for herself because it "didn't feel right". That said, her family and friends (including me!) rallied around her and voted like crazy for 7 days solid to try and win her the 1st prize.

Alas, it wasn't to be.

Kathy is a very worthy champion and, however she got that number of votes (whether that is by voting for herself or not), deserved to win.

Bit harsh that, Bob! Contests like his are never about who is the best - it's about how many people you can get to vote for you!

I mean this as no offence to Kathy, who I have already said is a worthy winner, but you could have got a poor singer with 50,000 friends and family who all voted once and they would have won - end of.

At the end of the day, music is very subjective anyway, so your "best" is another mans' "worst".

*You only have to look at Strickly Dancing to see that John Sargeant is no way a good dancer but because people like him as a person then he is getting the public vote.
I voted several times for the same person and perhaps this is where it is unfair, you should only be aloud to vote the once.
The top 2 were both pretty good so good luck to the winner.
