Local girl made good Sally Wainwright is now one of the country’s top screenwriters. Her latest work which airs on the BBC tonight (Tuesday)will warm the cockles of your heart.

For anyone old enough to remember, the title of Sally Wainwright’s latest TV series may sound a little racy.

After all, the film of a similar name starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider was banned in several countries after it was released.

Last Tango in Halifax on the other hand is a far gentler piece altogether.

Sally - brought up and schooled in Calderdale and who penned ratings-winners like At Home with the Braithwaites and The Unforgiven (which was shot around Halifax) - has based the six-part BBC rom/com on the romance her own mum Dorothy shared with her childhood sweetheart from Elland, after both had lost their partners in later life.

Last Tango in Halifax, says Sally, is based on a couple finding love again in their golden years. It was shot in Halifax and Harrogate.

Dorothy had been married to Harry Wainwright, Sally’s dad for 50 years before she was widowed. Aged 75, thanks to Friends Re-United, she got in touch with her childhood sweetheart Alec Walker, who was also widowed. The pair had grown up together in Elland.

“It was so lovely to see them get together after all those years. They fell in love and married, ” explains Sally.

Last Tango in Halifax which starts on BBC1, tonight at 9pm stars Anne Reid and Derek Jacobi as the lovebirds. Sarah Lancashire and Nicola Walker also star.
