Not that it’s likely to happen, but if the acting business ever went pear-shaped for Wendi Peters, chances are she could make a living as a cook.

Mad about baking, she was the 2009 Masterchef finalist and was picked for her ‘soft northern accent’ to narrate Britain’s Best Bakery.

As she rehearses for Northern Broadsides’ new production Rutherford & Son , which opens at the Viaduct Theatre, Halifax, tonight, the former Coronation Street actress expects that her baking skills will have been in demand to keep the cast going.

“I haven’t had to get the mixing bowl out yet - but I wouldn’t mind because I just love baking,” said Wendi, best known for her role as Weatherfield fishwife Cilla Battersby Brown.

In 2010 she appeared for Northern Broadsides in The Game and is thrilled to be back with the company for Rutherford & Son, a powerful drama written by Githa Sowerby, set in a 1912 northern industrial town.

“It’s amazing that in 1905 a woman was writing a play like this,” said Wendi. “I play Mrs Henderson - a working-class widow. She’s the mother of a young lady in the glass factory who is accused of stealing.

“She needs a bit of Dutch courage to knock on Rutherford’s door so she’s slightly tipsy and a little the worse for drink when she has a go at Rutherford. It’s a great two-hander with Barrie Rutter.”

Rutherford & Son is at the Viaduct Theatre, Dean Clough, until Saturday, February 16 before going on tour.

Box office is on 01422 255266.
