A Rastrick youngster has been crowned the North East Ballroom under 16 champion.

Aimee Milthorpe performed at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, Durham, with dance partner Rebecca Walker of Castleford.

The 14-year-old has been dancing for the last five years but had to have a year out after damaging the tendons in her foot. This was her first competition since her injury and the first time she has won.

She said: “I did find it difficult yet at the same time exciting. I felt nervous but there was such a good atmosphere which I enjoyed.

“Especially after I had a year out I wasn’t expecting to get to the final yet alone win. I was so overwhelmed when they announced our names. I was shocked but extremely happy.”

Aimee of Rastrick High School was supported by her parents Darren and Joanne. “I started dancing when I was about eight or nine-years-old after going once with my friend to Tonic Dance School in Brighouse. Dancing just makes me feel happy and when you hear the music it makes you want to move.”
