Figures have revealed that Calderdale Council’s libraries were owed a total £16,494.91 in unpaid fines at the end of last week.
Carole Knowles, libraries, museums and arts manager at the council, said: “It is important that when people visit the library they are provided with a good range of books, DVDs and CDs to borrow.
“When people keep books for longer than they should, it limits the range for other library users, so the fines system is intended to discourage borrowers from keeping items for longer than the loan period.
“It’s obviously important that any late return fees are paid as promptly as possible, but bringing back the books, DVDs and CDs is the most important thing.
“It is easy to avoid incurring late return fees, books can be renewed in person at any library, by telephone or online.”
