Preparations are underway for the highlight of the cultural year - Halifax festival 2012.

A launch night was held this week at the Square Chapel to officially kick off the countdown to what organisers say is going to be the biggest and most successful festival yet.

The ten-day festival will run from July 6 to July 15 and will involve loads of venues across the town - from theatres and open spaces to parks and pubs.

Already booked is a sensational outdoor production of The Railway Childen by Edith Nesbit outside Eureka on July 8.

And Manor Heath Park will once again see a fantastic outdoor Shakespeare production that will draw the crowds on a balmy summer’s night. Much Ado About Nothing promises a spectacle of comic and dramatic suspense when Heartbreak Productions visits the park on July 10. And for fans of music and poetry the Ian McMillan Orchestra is coming to town on Friday, July 13. Playing at the Square Chapel, Ian’s well-known sideways look at life and Yorkshire culture will be set to music - promising tales of family, longing and long histories.

But if none of these events grab you, there will be loads more, right across the spectrum of arts and culture. And over the coming months, the Courier will be featuring many of them as we count down the days to the festival.
