A musical director from a renouned brass band was awarded for her band’s accomplishments.

Elland Youth Band and musical director Samantha Harrison came second in the Intermediate Section of the National Youth Band Championships of Great Britain.

On April 19, Elland Youth Band was awarded in a special ceremony at Manchester’s Northern College of Music.

Samantha was awarded the Brian Hicks memorial shield for outstanding work with Elland Youth Band.

Organised by Brass Bands England, all bands had to play a 20-minute programme including the set test piece Plus Extra by Andrew Stephenson - a work specially commissioned for the competition.

The band’s principal cornet player, Bethan Plant, was awarded outstanding soloist of the section.
