The Halifax BBGB Band competed at the British Youth Band Association finals at Keys Park Stadium in Cannock, Staffordshire.
The Boys’ Brigade/Girls’ Brigade band has been competing at various competitions throughout the year in the third division of the BYBA League.
They came sixth and drum instructor Robert Batty said it was an enjoyable day for them.
He said: “Bearing in mind six months ago we started with over 75 per cent of the band who had never played or marched before they should feel really proud of what they’ve achieved in so little time.
“We’ve managed to come so far. The members are a real credit to the band and themselves.
“The brass section were hoping they would get best brass prize but sadly were beaten by a much more experienced brass line.” Two weeks ago the brass line had won the best brass at the Brass Explosion – a major contest in Stafford.
Band master Alan Hainsworth said: “These kids have a lot going for them and I’m amazed how well they’ve done.”
