Halifax Thespians are showing perfect timing with the choice of their next production - Jimmie Chinn’s touching comedy After September.
Set in a girls’ school at the start of a new term, the play features an odd assortment of eccentrics, misfits and oddballs who have reluctantly returned after the summer holidays.
The year is 1964 - but staff and pupils are living in the past. The school is unsafe and run-down and there is no money to pay the bills.
Pupils returning after the holidays find that a classroom ceiling has collapsed, a pet dog is missing and a government inspector is poking his nose in.
Worse than that he is in possession of anonymous letters defaming the school and skeletons are about to come tumbling out of the closet.
The play is directed by Derek Smith and the cast includes John Davies, Kris Liddicoat, Polly Bryan, Kerry-Anne Fennelly,Penny Wadsworth, Dorothea Annison, Christine Marsh, Jeanne O’Rourke,Liz Bick,Christine Noble-Doyle and Christine Tetlow.
Jimmie Chinn was born in Lancashire in 1940 and his early years in Oldham and Manchester were to shape his writing in future years.
He trained as an actor in London and worked in many aspects of the theatre before retraining as a teacher. From 1984 he concentrated on writing for the theatre.
After September will be staged at Halifax Playhouse from Tuesday, October 15 to Saturday, October 19 at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
