The first pieces were stunningly vibrant and challenging contemporary, composed by Luca. Set in the aurally supportive acoustic of Halifax Minster, these pieces shone brightly, demonstrating the subtle qualities of the instrument.
After a charming introduction, Luca played “She Likes Vivaldi”, based on Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”, followed by a beautifully crisp interpretation of “September Song” by German composer, Kurt Weill. Another contemporary Sonata, composed by Luca was followed by a lively and rich rendering of Gershwin’s standard, “I’ve Got Rhythm”. A splendid performance, by a hugely skilled clarinettist exploring the full scope of the instrument.
