Overgate Hospice Choir’s annual hymn sing was under the inspirational direction of Dr Gordon Stewart, well-known for his work on BBC’s Songs of Praise.
Besides his direction of audience and choir, Dr Stewart was a lively raconteur.
From the outset, the choir was on top form, with a whole range of styles tackled with relish, precision and technical assurance.
Traditional hymnody – O Praise Ye the Lord, The Day Thou Gavest, To God B The Glory – sat well with more adventurous material, including two pieces from the repertoire of the famous Crystal Cathedral Choir in California.
Alan Horsey was at the piano and music director Dr Simon Lindley was organist.
Rachel Mosley, of Opera North, the evening’s special guest, contributed notably to the success of the event as soloist in the American repertoire and, particularly, for her glorious rendition of Mozart’s Alleluia and its preceding aria.
A retiring collection raised £2,000.
